What is Mock Trial?
Mock trial is an annual statewide competition between high schools. Each school fields a team of attorneys and witnesses based on a criminal case file. The case file includes evidence, witness statements, documents, police reports, and rules of evidence etc., in other words everything that a real criminal case would include. We then put on trials in county court against other schools, competing in actual courtrooms in front of real judges, and against the best students around the state.
Mock trial teaches advanced analytical ability, critical thinking, public speaking, presentation skills, the basic content and processes of our legal system, and self-confidence. The result is that your children will have the opportunity to acquire elite skills—an opportunity that is not available to other students, even those in advanced AP courses.
At Hillsdale, our Mock Trial team takes the opportunity to showcase its skills seriously. Each year we scrimmage and compete against the best teams in the state. Most importantly, the idea is to have fun. And we do. The camaraderie and experience of competing at a high level are memories they will never forget. Indeed, the mock trial experience will likely create your sons and daughters’ most important high school memories. It can create lifelong friendships, and form a long-lasting connection to a tremendous community of students and coaches. Though the time commitment can be significant, and the competition intense, the experience is worth it.
Our Mission
Hillsdale High School Mock Trial is dedicated to developing students’ ability to think critically, speak publicly, master sophisticated concepts, and perform confidently in an academic and legal competition. The unique performance-based academic experience that mock trial offers allows us to unlock hidden potential and develop skills that will serve students for a lifetime. Perhaps most importantly, we seek to create memories, form lasting friendships, and have fun; which we do.
Competing at an elite level in mock trial is expensive, principally due to significant travel costs. We are, nevertheless, pledged to ensuring, through fundraising and community outreach, that no student will be denied the opportunity to participate based on money.
